IF IT AINT HAPPENING HERE...WE DONT CARE..

And, today's Americans are so bad at geography as to not realize that the U.S.A. is actually on planet earth, where all of this is happening.

Oceans acidifying at unprecedented speed

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn21534-oceans-acidifying-at-unprecedented-speed.html?DCMP=OTC-rss&nsref=online-news

Short read.  The penultimate paragraph is a real knee slapper.

I didn't get the timing on the end of days scenario though.

Knee slapper? Or, head banger? Let's see ... the combined effect of increasing acidity to the point where crustaceans cannot form shells plus the effect of insufficient oxygen in the waters ... hmm ... what could that effect be? I think the effect is obvious and horrific. Why try to state that we don't know what it will be? Does Gruber mean that we don't know whether the effect will be cataclysmic or catastrophic or apocalyptic? What are the other options for such effects?

Good find on the article bobbo.

See,
the horrors of Mankind and changes?
For some reason, Mankind Never thinks of the long term..

How long ago did this start?  What made it worse??
Why are we continuing on the SAME TRACK?

We tell Brazil they cant CUT the rain forests..  but they need to food, insted of PAYING the USA for food.
WHY dont we do it in the USA??  we make MORE then enough.  over 80% is shipped OUT.

Europe??  cutting the Food making?  NOT in this life time.

There is a solution...a MEAN ONE..  And if things continue the way they are...MAYBE it will be 1/2 solved.

ECA--its a version of the Prisoner's Dilemma.  Only way to "win" is if EVERYONE takes a small hit.  And thats what doesn't happen.  If only 90% of hoomans do the right thing, they will be taken advantage of by the short term benefiting 10%.  Just like the rest of the World, and the USA?==or fairly, maybe that model is 2-3 decades out of time?

IOW--the benefit is immediate and personal, the harm is longterm and an environmental group dynamic.

Correct.  There is no hope.

There is a difficulty that CORPS do not see.
They THINK the gov will solve the problems..
IT CANT/WONT.

In business, CHINA is doing the correct hing.  ALMOST.  but, they will learn the hard way, as the USA DID..JAPAN learned quickly.
In china, the CORPS dont make TONS of money.  They put people to WORK.  They cant ALL be farmers, as it USED TO BE..

The MAIN problem which can be solved pretty quick, tends to be MATERIALS USED...bamboo is totally usable..over making metal cases..
HEMP is a wonderful material..  for clothing and many other goods.
Bamboo can be used for building materials insted of all the WOOD and STEEL..  Even log homes are better insulated then BOARDS..
There are so many things we could change...that are CHEAP.

Changing the USA pricing structure to be CLOSER to world prices..  Why our metals more expensive HERE, is stupid.
Tech and job cutting, and Condensing business from neighborhood stores to 1 BIG store has saved corps TONS AND TONS of money.
KILL the Stock market..

NOW for population control..  WHO on Earth wants to kill off, 50-80% of Humans.. 57 million square miles of land mass...how many should we have per mile?  take out the mountain ranges, and the Wild forests, and you would probably have 1/2 that.
100 people per sq mile?? that would be about 2/3 of the population GONE..
Knowing how SOME PEOPLE like cities...and LARGE PLOTS of land to farm.. 2.5 billion would be a MAX population.  North america(US and canada) is only 16% of the landmass.  Africa and ASia, makeup 50% of the world.

Amusing one paragraph item regarding a littered beach in Mexico wherein all the trash is from outside of Mexico.  We live in an interconnected world, and plastic lives forever.  Individual countries/people can be as caring/pure as they wish, but they will be swamped/littered by the rest of the world acting in their own selfish short term interest.

bo,
Yo aint read NOTHING yet..

http://www.nrdc.org/water/oceans/ttw/faq.asp

1. How widespread is beach pollution?

Every coastal state has a beach with pollution problems. In 2010, beach pollution prompted 24,091 closing and swimming advisory days at ocean, bay and Great Lakes beaches. That's the second-highest number of closing and advisory days since NRDC began issuing its annual Testing the Waters report 21 years ago.

According to the most recent data available, 55 percent of reported beaches are monitored, and 44 percent are monitored at least once a week. Increased monitoring continues to highlight the extensive problem of beachwater pollution.

2. What are the major causes of beach pollution?

The most frequently identified pollution source is stormwater, which led to more than 8,712 closing and health advisory days in 2010, followed by miscellaneous sources such as wildlife and boat discharges which accounted for more than 4,512 closing/advisory days, and sewage spills and overflows, which accounted for more than 1,880 closing and advisory days.

Problems with People and water..
People NEED water
People Build towns/cities NEAR WATER..If not a river then an Aquifer..  After USING the water, we tend to Dump it BACK into where it came from..
IF' you figure that EVERY river has at least, 100 towns and cities, taking and returning Water tot he river..Fun aint it.
Aquifers tend to be used by Farms and farming communities.  NOW add all the chemicals farms use..  AND we drink from it.

NOW something interesting.  the Average, SINGLE person uses about 20-50 gallons per day for organic waste.  Which is EASY to break down, and is only about 1% waste/99% water.  (potty breaks, showers).  #1 pollutant?  ASPHALT.  heat leaches out the oils.

NOW the confusing part is HOW plastics and REAL heavy garbage GETS into the waterways.  I understand it, but the AMOUNTS are enormous.

NOW,
An interesting fact..
Phosphates...ARE COOL..
They can break down TONS to different materials/chemicals/...
BUT, we hate them.  WE BANNED there use in cleaning products.
Because they make things GROW.  including IN our sewers..

Yes. They've also found large amounts of plastic debris on very remote islands with no one living on them.

Note: The U.S. produces 25% of the world's CO2 with only 4% of the world population. But, we also produce 50% of the world's solid waste.

Also note that since the U.S. and Canada have tighter air pollution standards, the U.S. and Canada get hit with a lot of Mexico's air pollution.

Countries are no longer in isolation. There is only 1 world ocean. There is only 1 world atmosphere. Both contain everything dumped into them from everywhere in the world.

MS,
I think the numbers are abit skewd..
Its hard to measure things in other nations.  China especially..
Yes, cars are a major concern. but,
1. listing CO2 are the major contaminate??  dont cover the rest of them.
2. the USA is not the major manufacture any more.

How many MAJOR contaminates and contaminated areas were found in the 60's-70's and even MORE NOW, just in the USA.
http://www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/
http://scorecard.goodguide.com/env-releases/land/

we are still over polluting our homes.

ECA--co2 goes into the atmosphere and circulated around the globe.  co2 may be "sourced" from China but its very easy to measure.  A ground spill/contamination is very localized and not the same challenge to control/clean up at all.

Can you more clearly/specifically state the point you are making?

Seems to me that RIGHT NOW--co2 is the pollutant that is most worrying and one that we could do something about.  What does it matter that there are 1000 or 10000 more on the list?

FREON--was on the list 2 decades ago.  Causing a hole in the ozone.  Very limited use and manufacture of the product compared to almost all other pollutants so it was easy to terminate its production and use.  And the ozone hole is closing up as a result.  Not so easy with carbon burning but the issues and challenges are philosophically very similar, just different in scope.

Another way to phrase the issue:  what do you think we should be doing differently in the area of avoiding our mass extinction?

I give you a location to check your ground water pollutants, as well as others and you wont look them up??  OK.
