The "real" game of Football (as in Soccer)
« on: May 24, 2006, 03:33:02 PM » by estacado
The World Cup in Germany is just a few weeks away, Brazil are still favorites, but I have a feeling they won't win it this year. My fantasy final would be Italy vs. Brazil. THAT would a match to watch. England have a chance, only if Rooney gets fit in time. The U.S.? Well.... hmmm.... I think they'll manage to get past the group stage. Interesting to see if there'll be a U.S. vs. Iran match. Anyhow, lots of great football to look forward to. :D

Do you guys in the U.S, really don't know much about football soccer? ??? Can't find a proper place to post this, had to put it under NFL, at least it's "football". Maybe there should a non-U.S. sports section for all the other sports.

We do indeed know what soccer is, and keep an eye out -- the US is going to be a real competitor in the next few years.  Kids that grew up in the eighties and nineties have parents that played and are getting good coaching.
The American Women's team has already won championships.  The men will face stiffer competition, but will be very respectable.

Soccer's real competition is baseball and auto racing, although hockey and basketball could get thrown in there if you count the playoffs.  I think there will always be a place for soccer in the US.  However, it is very unlikely it will become one of the top five US sports.  There is just not enough scoring to lure more casual sports fans.
