It sure looks like ice but how can we know for sure it is ice and not some other, heretofore unknown frozen substance?

Can we assume that the rim of the crater has snow or some form of ice crystals?

No data on that, but it's a reasonable assumption. This would be a great spot for a future Mars lander (outside the crater, of course).
