Should Cell Phone Jammers Be Aloud In Movie Theaters?
« on: April 11, 2006, 02:19:53 PM » by UnKnownViper
Positive: You don't have to punch the person sitting next to you for yapping about mindless things for 20 minutes.

Negative: When you come back to your house, only to find it in ashes... after a crappy movie.

I say well.... maybe give a 1 minutes time limit on cellphone talking.. and phones must vibrate. But how would that work?

Post your questions and ideas!!

My only concern about this law is for emergencies like doctors who need to be paged or parents with sick children (for example, my son has diabetes and I do not like to be out of touch).  That being said, I wonder if cell blocks do not effect pagers?

In general I hate cell phones. --oo!  Just got an idea for the first Top ten...

A Big Yes...
Here in my country we have three operators and an emergency net. Donīt really know how it works, but how about jamming those 3 and leave the emergency open...
And not only cinema, but pubic libraries, and restaurants too.

I donīt hate cellphones, but if people donīt know basic civility rules they become rather annoying.

The Doctor should either have someone covering for him or not go to the theater. The same with the sick child / parent / sibling / best friend. While these intrusions are rare and usually very short duration, they make a very poor excuse for NOT banning cell phones. The same scenario would happen if you were on a trip out of town. You could not just return in a matter of minutes.

I have been attending some classes on Saturday. Even though asked to turn off all cell phones, each class has been disturbed at least 4 or 5 times by cell phones. Then, instead of going out into the hall to continue the conversation, they continued their conversation in class.

They should not be aloud but they should be allowed.

Yeah I agree with Mr. Peters. I see no reason why cell phones should be blocked. I like having mine available. We normally don't go to the movies during opening night. Even if they are not talking on the phones, they are talking behind you, narrating every damn scene. Or laughing out loud about something stupid. We like to catch a matinee when possible, price is much better at that time and less stupid people.

More and more people will stay away from theaters to avoid the idiots who refuse to turn their phones off. (What did they do to piss others off before cell phones were invented?) We don't tolerate people talking to each other during a movie, why is such stupid and rude behavior tolerated just because one of the people in the conversation is on the phone?

The movie theaters will eventually take matters in their own hands. As the home theater experience improves and the public theater experience continues to deteriorate, theaters may use "cell-phone free" as a selling point. I know I'd be more likely to go to a theater that could guarantee me a movie without having to listen to some pretentious moron chatting with their friend on their cell.

But then I wouldn't have a reason to throw popcorn at people?

I think people are staying away more because of the cost than because of the odd cellphone ringing.

Cell phone companies should make an universal design in all their cell phones that allows a Bell Jammer to send a signal to it to automatically set it to vibrate. Both sides win. You can get your emergency call (in vibrate) and the audience and performance goes undisturbed. But, remember take that call outside the theater.

The simple solution would be to jam the signal only in the actual theatre. If your child needs a doctor it's not a huge sprint into the hallway. Also, most theatres have a phone line and people working in the theatre. Just jump to your feet and scream "MY SON NEEDS A DOCTOR!" I bet the theatre would take care of it.

And if your on call, just don't go to the movies.

I agree with david, that they should make somthing for making your cellphone automaticaly vibrate in a curtain area such as a theater. But what would happen when cell phones get so thin they cant fit a vibrator inside?

The ringing isn't the problem, it's the people talking loudly on them thats the problem. The ring usually lasts about 3 seconds then someone either turns the phone off and no one cares, or they have a 30 minute converstation about who Jenny slept with last night and everyones pissed.

Exactly. Talking during a movie is taboo, be it someone next to you or someone in the next county.
