Why is it that some people have to put their political or religious agenda on EVERYTHING. Why can't we just enjoy the holidays. (To be politically correct, notice that I did not say Christmas.) Cripes.

Consider what's happening in communities in my area, and I'm sure around the country. They have had traditional holiday decorations that may have included a lighted star on a hill side and Christmas trees on the streets and in the parks. But to be sensitive to Hanukkah and pressure from the Jewish community, the Menorah would also need to be included (with an equal amount of display). But that might offend people of the Islamic, Buddhist or other faith. In that public funds are used to purchase, install and maintain these "holiday" decorations, the only solution is for the community not to install any decorations.

Now that's the Spirit!

Why is it in bad faith to suggest that government funding should not be used for religious decoration?

I don't understand. If a church wants to decorate for Christmas on their own property and using their own money, fine.

If a temple wants to decorate for Hanukkah on their own property and using their own money, fine.

Ditto for mosques, Hindu, and Buddhist temples.

Why is it so hard to understand that it is genuinely both unconstitutional and insensitive to spend government money on religious displays when we could be providing health care and social services to people in need using the same funding? Is it really in the holiday spirit to decorate for particular religions with government money in a country with separation of church and state while people die for lack of food, health care, and other vital services? Is it really in the holiday spirit to waste energy on lights and throw away decorations and gifts few of us really need while sea levels rise and put millions out of their homes? Are these the type of priorities Jesus would support? Moses, probably. Mohamed, probably. OK, probably even Jesus and others would indeed support such waste. But, for people to claim to be spreading a message of peace while being as wasteful and consumerist as the holidays have become at a time when such waste is literally killing us is just a tad hypocritical, no?

AND, what if the church DONATED the materials to place a Display?

I see this more on the idea that the ORNAMENT had a IMPEACH BUSH logo..

The church need not donate anything. They should do it on church property not government property. Perhaps for doing it on public land, they should lease the land for the duration of the display. No. I think I'd be against that too, though possibly less strongly. I'd oppose that for the same reason I was opposed to the idea of Time Warner Central Park.

In other words, your topic is boring.

You're doing exactly what the blog editors do: Stating the same crap every day.

No wonder it's so easy to own you.

I am not an editor and I did not post this article for anything other than a quick chuckle or a chance to talk about positions on church and state.

Don't worry about James Hill... he has the strange delusion that he owns everyone on the planet and that we worship him just by mentioning his name.  I'm sure there's a medical name for this but I don't know what it is.  Oh wait... delusions of grandeur.

...or maybe Jesus Christ complex.

I am not worried about him... just don't want to appear to have more power than I do.

Jay, I like your posts and they provoke some interesting dialog. We may not agree and Scott will have a comment totally from the other side, but that's what this forum is about. Keep up the interest and topics.

Like I said before I post things that could be interesting to anyone, partly because I enjoy reading some of the responses but I won't always have a soapbox post to go with them.
