  NEW LED, cheap, Bright, GREEN?

Quote
Cambridge University researchers have developed cheap, light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs that produce brilliant light but use very little electricity. They will cost £2 and last up to 60 years.

Despite being smaller than a penny, they are 12 times more efficient than conventional tungsten bulbs and three times more efficient than the unpopular fluorescent low-energy versions.

Lets see.  Take our lighting needs, down 20% to 5%??  About 1/4 the power used NOW.
What other things could be improved with NEWER tech??  Will this lower prices at the STORE, considering that this will save over 1/3 from fluorescent..

This is really cool. It's probably not worth throwing out all of the CFLs at once to get rid of them since the savings will not be as big as going from incandescent to CFL was. For those who have not already gone to CFL, it will almost certainly pay, as soon as these actually hit the market.

One important note though. They state that CFLs are unpopular. I personally strongly prefer my current CFLs to any incandescents I've ever owned. All incandescents are yellow, even those called "bright white", which are actually 3500 degrees Kelvin as their color temperature. For the CFLs, I bought 4100K, which is truly white, rather than the bluish tint of the 5000-5500K bulbs.

And, they do turn on instantly, leaving you with some light as soon as you hit the switch. They do take a minute or so to reach full brightness though. Anyway, I've been extremely happy with CFLs and am not worried about mercury since the quantity of mercury in each bulb is less than that released by a coal fired power plant to make up the difference in power between my bulbs and incandescent lights. Of course, I do still bring the dead ones to Home Despot for proper disposal.

Perfect time for CFL manufacturers to get in on the ground floor for the next big thing in lighting. I would say that they have 4-7 years before most of their business goes to LEDs.

The only reason for a standard flashlight like a Maglite anymore is the heft as a weapon.  An LED flashlite will out-illuminate an incandescent anytime, power for power.

One of the best things about CFLs is that they don't put out much heat.  Living in FL, I used to hate to read at night since the incandescent bulbs were so hot.

Only problems with the LED's is they are DC, and Voltage limitations..
Even with a swap to a DC circuit, you need about 100 of them so you dont have to regulate the voltage.
WHAT is nice, is that 100 of these things can cover a WHOLE CEILING and give you GREAT lighting..
