Ah don't you just love the smell of change in the air? And by change I mean money as in this wonderful pork bill that was approved by the senate yesterday to the tune of $410 billion dollars. Naturally McCain stepped up and spoke out against the bill but unfortunately he wasn't voted president so they pretty much just humored him but check out these tidbits.

Quote from:
"How does anyone justify some of these earmarks: $1.7 million for pig odor research in Iowa; $2 million 'for the promotion of astronomy' in Hawaii; $6.6 million for termite research in New Orleans; $2.1 million for the Center for Grape Genetics in New York," he said.

He also noted the legislation includes 14 earmarks requested by lawmakers for projects sought by PMA Group, a lobbying company at the center of a federal corruption investigation.

I am glad to know that our congress is tightening their belts like we are in these tough times... of course McCain reminded everyone that Obama pledged to do a line by line audit of bills to which they all responded that these were left over from 2008. Now does that mean that they couldn't get Bush to sign it so they waited in hope that Obama would say heck sure you guys were so helpful during the election and all... oh wait change is coming...

Quote
The White House has said that Obama intends to sign the legislation, casting it as leftover business from 2008. Spokesman Robert Gibbs pledged on Monday the White House will issue new guidelines covering earmarks for future bills.

Naturally he will sign this bill by Friday so heck why not?

I don't think my girlfriend likes that idea but then again she gets a fraction of what congress gets.

Ooooh hardball in DC now

Quote from: CNN
Gibbs said Monday that the Obama administration was formulating guidelines for earmark reform.

The following day, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer declared that Congress, not Obama, will decide whether to put more limits on earmarks in upcoming spending bills.

Asked about Gibbs' statement, Hoyer said flatly, "I don't think the White House has the ability to tell us what to do."

He paused deliberately and quipped to reporters in the room, "I hope you all got that down."

I guess he forgets that the President can veto their bills since he is the administator for the government. Either way I am interested to see if A. Obama will veto it, B. If he will set a policy regardless of this comment, and C. if Gibbs will be re-elected since the public doesn't want big government spending at a time like this... all in all this could get a little interesting.

I have very low expectations in regards to Congress critters. They are the same idiots who miss-managed the economy, the banking sector and the financial sector for the last 20 years. Angry
