What a tragedy.  It's always a bummer when an expensive probe fails.  It's not like they have a lot of experience. I really doubt it was "shot down."  They just lost radio contact.

It's true the odds are probably against it but you're going to feel very foolish if it turns out the Lunatics actually did shoot it down.

I wouldn't begrudge them a space program because millions lack services. To do that would deny the U.S. a space program for the same reason. I think both countries can find solutions that allow for space programs and services to citizens if we really want to.
