There's always a new initiative to make us buy new displaysIntel Corp. came to San Francisco this week for the Intel Developers Forum, which showcases all the improvements the company hopes to implement in its microprocessor platforms, among other initiatives.
Generally speaking, at the event there always are a few dead ends and a lot of optimistic predictions; this year was no exception. That said, I did like a lot of what I saw and heard.
Most impressive was the fanless Atom chip. Nobody is sure what this chip will be used for, but various set-top box ideas immediately come to mind.
The company also was showing a small box running Linux. The chip had no fan; there was no fan on the power supply, and from what I could tell with my hand the box wasn't heating up much.
This is the sort of system you need in the TV/family room, where you do not want a lot of spurious noise. It'll be a sure-fire winner when it appears on the market in the fourth quarter.
