Axel Mellinger of Central Michigan University, spent 22 months and traveled over 26,000 miles to take digital photographs at dark sky locations in South Africa, Texas and Michigan.

"This panorama image shows stars 1,000 times fainter than the human eye can see, as well as hundreds of galaxies, star clusters and nebulae," Mellinger said.

The result is an image of our home galaxy that no star-gazer could ever see from a single spot on earth. Mellinger plans to make the giant 648 megapixel image available to planetariums around the world.

Too bad you can't click to zoom on the image. If anyone finds a version where you can, please post it.

Jay, the galaxy may be round (a disk) but since we're inside it, we see it as edge on, thus making it a straight line.  It's a beautiful siight when you're located under totally dark skies and can see it in the summer or winter.  In the summer you can see the heart of the Milky Way in the constellation Sagittarius, and binocs or a small telescope yield views of many star clusters and dust globules (dark patches).

Yeah that was a sarcastic comment but I just look at that photo and see it as incomplete as there is still so much out there for us to discover. I really need to get a telescope someday and sit outside with the girlfriend (not on cold nights because she is a wuss) and just do some exploring on my own. Either way these photos are incredible.
