What happened to the Valley's zero-sum game?

The recent announcement that AMD and Intel are going to kiss and make up kind of caught me by surprise. And after reading all I could, and talking to the companies, I have to conclude that for some odd reason both companies are beneficiaries of this deal -- which hinges around Intel's business practices, both real and perceived.

What happened to the Silicon Valley zero-sum game?

In this case, both companies get a short-term benefit. For starters, AMD (AMD 6.52, -0.01, -0.15%) gets a fat check for $1.25 billion if it stops harassing Intel (INTC 19.88, +0.06, +0.30%) and gets back to work.
