I wonder if the guy decided to really put up a stink if the town would have had to take all the pennies to pay off the bill.

A businessman who tried to pay a property tax bill with 33,000 pennies got turned down by a county treasurer in Washington state, who said she didn't have the staff to count them

Dalhousie University student Sherry Benteau plans to pay off her student loan one penny at a time – literally... The 33-year-old's goal is to raise 10 million pennies to pay off her $100,000 debt, and since starting her collection in May (2009) she has amassed 30,000 pennies – or $300 - from friends, co-workers and customers at the downtown Halifax coffee shop where she works.

I doubt she made the goal but perhaps I should collect pennies and pay some bills that way... be worth it to see the face of the clerk I hand them to.

I recall previous stories in the past about this sort of stunt. The tax collection dept. has the right to demand that all coinage be properly rolled in the appropriate coin wrappers, if I'm not mistaken. this is to facilitate counting and weighing the rolls to ensure correct payment is offered. These can still be refused due to the tax dept.'s inability to securely store and ship them to a bank. Just try to get a tax clerk to sign a refusal, lots of luck with the civil? service on that one!

They wont sign anything..  Thats the hard part.

The odd part about this story is that I don't think they were rolled up by if he went to the bank to get the pennies then they should have been in rolls... if I was to pull something like this I would have them rolled and refuse to leave until they either give me a receipt or sign a refusal. Either way a lot of people are not happy given the economy and the government trying to find money anyway they can.

I wouldn't care but the argument of counting them would be moot as it would be up to the bank if they would accept them as rolled besides if I got the rolls from the bank then their argument of my stiffing the rolls is moot also.

I once heard someone who had been arrested for breaking into a vending machine attempted to make bail in quarters. I never checked the legitimacy of the story.
