The Mountain from Terje Sorgjerd on Vimeo.

This video, shot from the tallest mountain in Spain, features time lapse frames of the weather, the landscape and the sky.  The shots of the night sky and the Milky Way are very difficult to film due to the long exposure times and optics required.  Easily visible near the upper galactic center are star clusters and clouds of red and blue glowing gases, the Lagoon, Eagle and Trifid nebulae.

Pausing the video on individual frames reveals wide angle detail in the center of our galaxy.  Be sure to change to full screen.

Other videos by this artist can be found here.  "The Aurora" video is also superb.

I spent a few hours in a farmers field in New Zealand a few years back.  The Milky Way was in evidence just as clearly as in this video.  Clean air makes a difference and gave "back bone to the universe" a meaning you won't get without seeing it or photo's like this video.  The moon also came out and it was possible to read newsprint at night.  That happened once on a sailboat in the carribean, but I've never seen the Milky Way like that before or since.  A must do if you ever visit New Zealand, South Island.

Yes this is an excellent presentation.
That sort of night sky is common routine fare out in the Northern Canadian Prairie nights. It is a result of Altitude, Latitude, and Climate [aka: high and dry in the North!] More than 2000' above Sea Level, Relative Humidity less than 35% or so, and North of the 50th Parallel, plus 1500 miles from any major open body of water! [only Canada, Mongolia or Siberia!]
The other scenes are interesting, too! Note the wave action in both the Sea and the Clouds. Plus those are different flora than what I have seen.
Is this a rerun of a single 24 hour period or a repeat timing sequence of several days in a row?
Is that a planet seen in the mid day sky? maybe Venus?

bobbo, best sky I've ever seen was at (your choice) Kitt Peak or McDonald observatory.  I may have some hours at the McMath Solar Telescope at Kitt Peak this summer.  Yay!  Finally!

obtuser, I'll look again, about what time in the movie was it?

It occurred twice: 1:56 to 1:59 and again at 4:59 to 5:03

I also note that twice a bright light streaks left to right just above the horizon but in the heavy clouds during twilight. What was that? An Airliner on a landing approach?
See 2:42 to 2:46 and again at 5:46 to 5:50

Then twice we are shown a daylight uphill view of what appears to be an observatory. There are 23 or more possibles:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Astronomical_observatories_in_Spain
See 1:50 to 1:52 and again at 4:54 to 4:56

The more I review this, the more I find that is intriguing. At 4:44 to 4:53 there are numerous minor lights going in different directions and speeds than the stars in the late twilight horizon. A few could be again airplanes near an airport, but some may be a meteor shower.

The collage may not be taken in all the same immediate location, or with the same camera, but that is beyond my ability to parse. Interesting beyond just a little.
Found the original You Tube posting which has some comments which amuse, enlighten, and in some cases disgust!

One comment indicates the filming location is Tenerife, Canary Islands. That is a Spanish Protectorate, I believe. So that would be as near to paradise as you can spit!

Obtuser, at 1:56 that looks like a lens flare from the setting sun.  Also possibly a reflection from an AA jet from the setting sun, notice it's two lights, one bright and a smaller one at 1 o'clock.

At 2:48, that appears to be a slow moving aircraft.  It's above the horizon thus in the sky.  Other faster moving aircraft precede it.

The observatory looks to be the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory at the highest point on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain.

The seeing statistics make it the second best location for optical and infrared astronomy in the Northern Hemisphere, after Mauna Kea Observatory, Hawaii. The site has some of the premier astronomical facilities in the Northern Hemisphere, including the adaptive optics corrected Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope which provides the highest resolution solar imaging of any telescope, and the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias which is the world's largest single-aperture optical telescope as of July 2009.

The video has yet again been reposted.  Let's hope this one lasts longer than the first two.

Also, correction.  The location of the observatory is El Teide in Spain.

Just so you can see the Milky Way in stunning detail, here is a site showing the entire night sky in ultra hi-res with zooming and panning.  To the south of our galaxy are its two satellite galaxies, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds.  The LMC contains the Tarantula Nebula.  Near the galactic center are the great glowing emission and reflection nebulae, along with Bok Globules and totally black, opaque dust clouds in which new stars are also being born.  The brighter red emission nebulae are huge stellar nurseries, and some of the first pictures of a solar nebula have been captured there.  These dark disks with a glowing star at the center are what our own Solar System looked like before the planets were born.
