1  Water Cooler / This and that / How to correctly utter my name
« on: November 22, 2006, 09:58:25 AM »

Hello my name is Joao (sorry, the site won't accept the tilde...) and I pronounce my name as zhwaw  :D

this was a back and forth item with me and Max that didn't fit in thread's subject: http://cagematch.dvorak.org/index.php/topic,598.msg4543/topicseen.html#msg4542 so I moved it here... hey, feel free to post your name's correct pronunciation...

To continue the conversation, with Max:
Yes, the Iberian peninsula was under various influences over time. Celts, yes, and then Romans, Goths, Arabs, the lot... And we traveled a lot in the XVI th century, so there's also some influence of the places we touched, India, Japan, Africa in our language. But mainly it's Latin based.

3  Water Cooler / Entertainment / Cult Television
« on: November 04, 2006, 05:49:55 AM »

My recent Tv viewing habits drawn me more and more to some TV series. The way storytelling has evolved into compelling rich and twisted plots, keep me glued to the TV set. Also, digital recording and DVDs enhance the experience. Not anymore I can see "24" one show a week. Local channel 2 from time to time does a 24 season in a day and a half. Six episodes back to back with two or one hour breaks. And man, it's a completely different experience.
So I was tracking some personal favorites here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_television. I found some stuff I've already forgotten I've seen and enjoyed.

What's your views on this. Favourite shows?

(northern exposure, Monty Phyton's, 24, prison break, the sopranos, blackadder, the office(uk),and counting...)

4  The Tech Section / Tech News / Commentary / New iPods
« on: September 13, 2006, 11:13:00 AM »

What do you think about the new iPods?

For me was a let down.
Don't like at all the new nano. It's my taste, of course, but I don't like it.
The only one I like is the minimalist new shuffle. But I would like it to have a screen, text black and white, but a screen...
And the announced iTV box is, IMHO overpriced. It should be 199$.

5  The Tech Section / Blog Layout Issues / New layout coming in DU?
« on: July 30, 2006, 06:33:52 AM »

I was posting a comment there and suddenly thought I was elsewhere. The layout was completely done over, with some red topic buttons, and an overall more modern look.
Sorry to post it the forum, but I just had to say:
It looked very cool.

6  The Tech Section / Tech News / Commentary / Is it time to "Upgrade"
« on: July 28, 2006, 01:57:15 AM »

Prices nosedived today... it's the Conroe, the new stepstone processor, factor.
Strange this happening when everyone is on vacation...
Does this mean that AMD and Intel don't want us to notice that "older" processor just fell up to 43% ???
This might be the time to upgrade to a Dual P4 or AMD X2 4400+  for peanuts...

8  The Tech Section / Tech News / Commentary / Trusted Computing Modules - A threat to computing? Is Linux immune?
« on: June 27, 2006, 11:13:16 AM »

I was posting on the blog http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?p=5909 on a Post about "Linux compliant PCs in Taiwan" and suddenly became aware of a new "feature" the Industry is planning to drop on us. Trusted Computing Modules.
These are in brief, hardware locks to prevent your hardware (you know, the one you paid for...) from running code you're not supposed to (like P2P, DVD rippers, and uhhh... Virus...) or listening to non DRMed mp3.
It's easy to see that if all goes according to the pundits desires, your machine will be turned into a Redmond zombie (and Cupertino, for that matter )
Is there a way out?
Can Linux work around this? Or is there a future on Linux?

9  The Tech Section / Operating Systems / What's yout favourite Linux flavour?

the perfect complement to the thread...

10  The Tech Section / Operating Systems / What about OSX on PC!
« on: June 10, 2006, 12:13:59 PM »

OK. Iīm not promoting illegality, but Iīve heard thereīs a OSX-intel install hacked to work on plain PC hardware.
It seems to me that this is way more desirable than running Vista... Except Itīs not in the interest of Apple and certainly not of Microsoft. But I would like to hear your opinions. Is the OSX experience tied to Apple hardware or should it be a more "democratic" system

11  The Tech Section / Operating Systems / Apple Pro Hardware, when?
« on: May 27, 2006, 10:58:04 AM »

It was common consensus that Apple was waiting for Conroe to debut to replade its G5 dual and quad core towers.
Core Duo 2 (as it was dastardly coined) is expected to hit the streets around July. Given that these share the same chipset with Core Duos, Apple already had the chance of making the new machines and its just waiting for the new chip from Intel (leap ahead).
Can we expect Pro apps also debuting the same day? And Photoshop?

Any clues?

12  The Tech Section / Blog Layout Issues / red buttons
« on: May 27, 2006, 03:00:26 AM »

This is not a Blog issue, itīs a Forum issue, sorry, but if thereīs a section better than this, I donīt know about it...

My Red buttons all render like this, with a black border. This happens in Firefox, IE6, IE7, Opera and Safari.

14  Water Cooler / Entertainment / What the **** do we know
« on: May 12, 2006, 05:11:45 AM »

What is this?

- What the Bleep do we know? -

I saw this movie and my first though was... "what the ****...this is BS..."
And  after checking IMDB and wikipedia, my first suspicions were, bit by bit supported by the critics.
Myself I feel a bit swindled after these kind of "science" infotainment, but filled with mambo jambo "facts".

What's your opinion?

15  The Tech Section / Tech News / Commentary / QuickTime VR - Whatever Happened?
« on: May 11, 2006, 02:45:53 AM »

QTVR - a very cool idea Apple had some years ago.
Infact so cool that it bundled it into Quicktime.
But it stopped supporting it some years ago (at least not actively).
The program to make QTVR is Mac only and I believe it still is 68k code (not sure...)

Whatīs the future of it? Is it replaced by Flash or Java applets?

P.S.
My good buddy is a QTVR fan and he has a very cool site featuring mostly Portugal (my country) and Spain, proving that QTVR is awesome.
