1  Water Cooler / Entertainment / Which TV Commercials Are The Most Obnoxious
« on: July 30, 2006, 11:17:11 PM »

This isn't really a debateable idea, just what bugs your butt. Which commercial now playing on TV annoys you the most. Hey if you have more then one, go for it. Repeats are OK, that way we can see what bugs other's butts too. But please, try to keep your list to under 100.  :D

Currently the Girls Gone Wild are putting a burr inside my undies. Watching Comedy Central, they have one EVERY commercial break at night. They have no class and I don't want to watch soft porn teasers in the middle of a funny movie.

The Jon Lovitz Subway commercials. I know he didn't write the script, but I just want to smack the guy whenever he says "Eat Fresh".

Any commercial selling Cialis or Viagra. Hey, if Janet Jackson can't accidentally show her tit, then these guys shouldn't be able to discuss getting it up.

2  Politics Central / Soapbox - general discussion / 2nd Amendment Lawsuit.
« on: July 20, 2006, 06:06:26 PM »

It was announced today That former Representative Bob Barr (now a Washington Lobbyist) filed a $400 million lawsuit against the Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg.

*

It seems that Bloomberg is cracking down on illegal guns and the dealers that sell them. Bloomberg started a Federal Court complaint against firearm dealers illegally selling guns involved in NYC crimes.

"Mayor Bloomberg is fighting to protect police officers and citizens from illegal guns, which has nothing at all to do with the Second Amendment," said his spokesman.

Bloomberg's lawsuit asks the federal court to order supervision and extra training for the gun dealers in Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia. It also seeks some damages and compensation.

*

Barr claims that by naming a specific gun dealer in Georgia, the dealer was defamed. He also claims this is a 2nd Amendment challenge.

"We will fight to prove the Constitution of the United States is still intact, and that Mr. Bloomberg's fight to abolish the Second Amendment must and will fail," said Edwin Marger, a lawyer who filed the lawsuit with Barr.

OK, so should Bloomberg go after the dealers or is he going against the 2nd amendment.

3  Politics Central / Soapbox - general discussion / Do extreme columists hurt their cause?
« on: July 03, 2006, 01:42:19 PM »

The Editorial Page editor of the Shreveport Times is contemplating dropping Ann Coulter as a columnist and has come close several times before. It isn't her politics, it is her style. She would be replaced by another conservative.

The National Society of Newspaper Columnists, meeting in Boston this past weekend, awarded Coulter its annual Sitting Duck Award for easiest column target. The NSNC noted that it gave the prize to the columnist/author "for cheapening political discourse in America." The statement added: "We award the Lame Duck reluctantly, because we know Ms. Coulter is desperate for any kind of attention."

http://tinyurl.com/lhnmm

Similar complaints have been leveled at other far right wing columnists / TV and radio hosts such as Michelle Malkin, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Rielly.

Michael Moore and Al Franken are apparently the devils on the left.

Do these extremists go so far that they actually hurt their cause or are they just preaching to the choir?

4  Water Cooler / Tasteless or Not Tasteless / Breast Feeding in Public :o
« on: July 03, 2006, 01:03:45 PM »

Just recently, a mother was shopping in a Victoria Secret store. When she asked if she might use a change room to breast feed her infant, the employee directed the mother instead to a public washroom down the street.

http://tinyurl.com/kaycu

The questions for discussion then is

Is it wrong to breast feed in public?

Should a woman be charged for indecent exposure for feeding her child?

Would you like to be fed in a restaraunt washroom because the management doesn't want your mother bringing in outside food?

(If I had John's or Uncle Dave's collection of pictures, I would post a suitable one)

5  Politics Central / Soapbox - general discussion / Balanced Reporting
« on: June 28, 2006, 03:28:16 PM »

I came across this article today. I recommend all read it, even if you disagree with the subject.

http://tinyurl.com/ecnjd

The major media (also called the Main Stream Media) in America has seldom presented a balanced picture of other countries. The example in this article is the Israeli / Palestine conflict.

When Israel grabs someone from Hamas, they become a prisoner. If Hamas grabs someone from Palestine, they are a hostage.

If Israel drops a 500 pound bomb on an apartment building, it is justified. If a Palestinian suicide bomber blows himself up and kills some Israelis, he is a mad, murdering bomber. To his family he might be a freedom fighter.

It is no accident that this perversion of language is occurring. The Pentagon and the Israeli government both use this biased language in their briefings to reporters, and the U.S. media lap it up and recite it uncritically. (from the article)

Since it is near impossible to be a totally unbiased editor, how loudly should we complain when reporting becomes so one sided?

All comments welcome

6  Politics Central / Conspiracy Theories / Was there a conspiracy to invent WMDs?
« on: June 25, 2006, 07:17:04 AM »

I have heard several Bush apologists claim that the intelligence for invading Iraq was just "faulty". Many claimed it was invented and Congress and America were lied to.

In today's Washington Post, an article quotes the former CIA European head as saying he warned the CIA and Tenant that the information was unreliable. In fact, no CIA agent had ever even spoken with the informant. The Germans, who had the informant, reiterated that the information was very suspect as well as the informant himself.

Apparently Tenant told him it would be taken care of but the next day Powell gave his UN speech stating the Iraq DID have mobile biological units.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/24/AR2006062401081.html?sub=AR

So, was the intelligence faulty or a conspiracy to convince Congress to support an invasion of Iraq?

7  Politics Central / Conspiracy Theories / Did the Republicans Steal the 2004 Election
« on: June 19, 2006, 02:58:25 PM »

Did the Republicans steal the 2004 election? Will there be a repeat this fall?

Several states had difficulties counting ballots after the election. There were also difficulties with people disenfranchised who were eligible to vote. Over 360,000 Ohio voters turned up at the polls only to find their names stricken and couldn't vote. That was more then enough to give Ohio to Kerry. In Ohio, the exit polls were in favor of Kerry, right up to the end when they suddenly went to Bush.

Would a recount fix things or even tell us the truth? No. There are too many "electronic" votes to be counted and their veracity is in doubt. The county officials and  software officials refused to allow an audit of the results.

8  Politics Central / Soapbox - general discussion / Universal Health Care; Yes or No.
« on: May 09, 2006, 03:07:04 PM »

America remains the only industrialized country where financing health is not considered a government function like building highways and supporting national defense. We have a right to clean water piped to our homes, but not access to medical care.

Clinton’s missed opportunity was the third time since World War II that universal health care was on the table with a serious desire for results. Harry Truman wanted it. So did Lyndon Johnson. Truman got nothing and Johnson, with his masterful control of Congress, managed to win Medicare for the elderly and Medicaid for the poor, but universal coverage escaped him. For Truman and Johnson, the American Medical Association led the charge against what they saw as “socialized medicine.”

Experts who care deeply about this issue tell me there is no chance for a “single payer” system now — no extension of Medicare to everyone. The AMA curiously would not make up the major opposition this time. Many doctors have seen their incomes level off and their professional lives made miserable by private insurance companies, and they actually prefer to treat Medicare patients these days. It is the private insurers who make up the post powerful lobby now.

Why repeat this history? Because health care reform will become a big deal again soon. Right now the Iraq war and gas prices are dominating the political discussion, but lack of affordable heath care impacts so many Americans that it must rise to the top of the agenda again.

These comments were taken from the following article
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12703029/

So, I predict Universal Health Care will become a major Democratic cause in the 2006 election. If it doesn't become a rallying point for Democrats, they won't win either house.

9  Water Cooler / Entertainment / Most influential concept album
« on: May 05, 2006, 08:42:18 PM »

I got this idea from the 1,000th issue of Rolling Stone. A reader poll asks what is the most influential album of all time. The four listed are:
Tommy, The Who
American Idiot, Green Day
Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd
Downward Spiral, Nine Inch Nails.

My personal pick would be The Beatle's Sargent Pepper . In my opinion it was the first major concept album and none of the other's would have any chance without it.

A close second is The Who's Tommy. It allowed more focused albums such as Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Super Star and Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell to become more mainstream,  as well as inventing the term Rock Opera

There are no right or wrong answers, just opinions and maybe what influenced you the most. I expect different ages to feel different albums had different influence.

BTW, the poll was Tommy-23%, American Idiot-9%, Dark Side of the Mood-56%, and Downward Spiral-12%.
