You forgot or didn't know that some of these assets ["papers"] get sold at a discount, not full value! Hence your calculations are incorrect. The WHY in all of this is more important!

Obtuser---stop making yourself look stupid just to pimp me.  I really could wind up in jail.  Still months to go.

for the movie:  Roomie got into a shouting match with one of her scum-mates.  All I heard her say was "I'm not a whore."  Evidently, drug dealer No1 was jealous that she was hanging around drug dealer No 2 so he got jealous.  Now, without me saying a thing I heard her on the phone tell No 1 that he could not come over to visit because "I" was not allowing it and he would be trespassing if he did --so he can't come over.

She is stupid, Druggie No 1 is stupid (No 2 is actually smart) but surely if the cops told them they could visit any time he wanted with Roomies permission, then neither one would be doing what they are doing now.  Its "working out" for me right now.... but I don't think cops should give out different conflicting advice to parties in conflict.

I also don't think the law that applies to commercial multiple rental agents should also apply to homeowners renting out a bedroom.  Call me self centered.

Now that you detailed the melodrama, I strongly suggest you sell and move at the earliest opportunity. Your experiment with being an enabler to kick the lifestyle is an abject failure. Cut your losses and cut out! When you have to stoop to eavesdropping, and maybe illegal wire tapping ?, it way past time to pull up stakes!

I resent your misuse of the word pimping! My advice is free, and sincere, take it or leave it, or JFO!

Another alternative is to list your house for sale as a rental property with tenant! The presence of buyers with real estate agents and a posted sign might change to whole scene in your favor! If you get an offer you like, then take the money and run to where you would like to live! More ways of skinning a cat as they say....

Obtuser--getting my valuables off property is good advice.  Thanks.

There is no sex or other complicating issues going on at all.  My agreement to let her stay here was one of "compassion" as I see it in HER own best interest to learn how to get along as she has no alternatives.  But.... the fact that she can't form that recognition is why she's in the position she is.  Her mother is evidently even worse--alcoholic schizophrenic.  As I'm not.... I thought the change would be good for her.  My housemates own adult daughter talks to her on the phone but has no other contact even though she lives only a few miles away.  She cares---but not enough to ruin her own life.  Nice balance.  The crazy will stop with the Gen X.

I have been a little bit "self centered" in this experience.  Living with crazy.  In isolation--just her and me--I think she was getting better.  But as so often the case...its her friends.  Her druggie and sex desiring and ex-con "friends" telling her what she wants to hear.  And as I have told her until I stopped:  You create most of your own problems.  Just as I have.

Life is like that.
You are welcome, hope I have been of some help.
Regards the conjugal topic, it is still important to be able to prove any claims made are not valid. Keep a diary of who you are with, when and where. Use your camera to document where you are at a given time. I have a Sony A55V that is GPS enabled and does document for me when [date & time] plus Lat. & Long. Such data might in future be of great value!
My daily walk with camera(s) and dog form a digital image blog of my forays into the neighborhood, or conservation areas, and even downtown. Document what tickles your fancy, from graffiti, to gardens, to garbage and even garages! [I have several years of "trophies" not all g words either!]
Research what your state laws are regards not just leaser / leasee relationships, but what is interpreted as common law, and non conjugal residency. You need to know what type of liabilities and assets you have, plus how to defend against illegal claims!
It is not legal to hire a biker to do the eviction, but I have known of where the threat was implied and worked. But be careful as that can backfire if said roomer is connected!
Good luck!

I would suggest that you return her personal property to her [candles, etc.] then increase your fire insurance coverage, making sure that you are covered for the misdeeds of your house guest, ie. including her visitors!
Next take all of your valuables that you don't want to lose in the event of a fire, theft, or worse a donnybrook between guest and visitors. Place all these irreplaceable s in storage off site out of harms way. Then at anytime you think you smell, hear, or feel that there is illegal activity such as occurs when recreational pharmaceuticals are in use, call the cops! Get her on record!
Being a gentleman and officer will to a degree support your position, but cover your backside the best you can and hope for the best!
Here in Ontario, Canada you would have another potential liability. Under our Family Law Reform Act, she might claim cohabitation which after 5 months elevates her status to common law spouse, and co-ownership of all your assets! That would need to be avoided and contested immediately with credible witnesses!
I don't envy your predicament one little bit! Good luck, eh!

I won't read the link.  I'll just wait until the field matures and I can read about settled points no longer in dispute.  THIS is a great time saver.

.......and we'll never know what it does until we do.  I Chuckle..... I thought 5-6 years ago they discovered that a lot of the timing switches were coded in the junk dna?

I will borrow one of Scotts lines of inquiry:  I think the notion that junk dna does nothing requires "extraordinary evidence."   Until then, absence of proof is not proof of absence.  Its "there"...Generally (NOT ALWAYS) that means its doing something besides taking up space.

You are obviously of a closed mind! "I won't read the link." is proof of that, especially when this article is not that long as I recall.
" absence of proof is not proof of absence", while this is logically true, it too fails the need to explore and discover the why, what, where, when, and how factors in all good scientific investigation. Is a vacuum truly empty? No, because while it lacks matter it may contain energy waves like radio, gamma, xrays, cosmic rays in transit! So thus absence of matter does not prove that a vacuum is empty, n' est pas?

Quote M/S Scott:
Dictionaries may have started that way but have long since morphed into repositories of definitions of words. Dictionaries are descriptive rather than proscriptive and so meanings of words change over time. So, the word dictionary itself has now come to mean a list of definitions.
unquote~!
So there you go, admitting that the word DICTIONARY is abused and misused!
Likewise Sick is sickly used!
I pause my case! And I would go drink a Sick's if I had one!
Observation: the bureaucratic mind frequently lacks a sense of humor! Symptomatic of BURNT OUT!

Obtuse One--my comments are EXPRESSLY BASED on knowing the cops must wait for a warrant.  Thats what "ok" means.  I'm not criticizing the cops, but rather the law.  This isn't making me look forward to your verdict on "sick."

The criminals helping the first search efforts is not a product of nerve and gall but of feeling superior and having power over everyone else.  Thats how they kidnapped the little girls and thats how they fooled the community too.  I wonder what they think sick means?

But you must concede that the law and case law history have been developed in order to protect citizens from over zealous or corrupt enforcement!
Hence the meaning of sick you are probably looking for is TWISTED!

One of the errors in thinking that is very common to Homo stupidous, is judging others by our selves! It is very difficult to put one's self into the mindset of someone else when their rules and experiences are vastly different from your own. You were getting close to that in your comments regards the Black Clevelander who helped the  in the initial rescue. I have had limited exposure in my driving career with them in Cleveland and elsewhere in the USA over more than just the 15 years I drove for a living. It helps being a Canadian, and from a small "L" liberal upbringing, so it stands out very quickly in my mind. It also applies to our "First Nations" on their reserves! The word Ghetto is inadequate! But I have met numerous fellow humans who are Black, or of Indigenous heritage who are well adjusted, well educated and in some cases relatively wealthy. We have no choice as to what circumstances we are born into, but some do over come disadvantages, handicaps, and impediments, while others lack initiative, imagination, or languish in abject mental poverty! You have absolutely no idea how some of the rest of our species live! [paramedic Son-inlaw was one of several volunteers to go to both Haiti and our own Cree Attapitawaskat  ?sp, Reserve [James Bay area which is again flooding and sewers backing up] for a week to install and train in the use of portable water purifiers, and virtually refused to discuss what he/they saw and found!]
You want a definition of sick....words in any language are inadequate in some cases! There are people in this world who are physically healthy, but feel and think they are sick, and vice versa. Getting my or anyones opinion on what is sick is irrelevant and immaterial! So get over your fixation on dictionaryism! In the first place that word has the root word DICTION, which has more to do with categorizing and documenting PRONUNCIATION! The various word meanings are tag on after thoughts! Can I be more OBTUSE without being perverse and profane?

Obtuser--thats fair and I agree about the imprecision possible in the language that you highlighted but you were asked for your opinion on the meaning of sick.  the objectivity of numbers does not apply to that question.  So, we are back to a split vote.  Why don't you try again?
Sick? Growing up to me that was a lager!

And is still my favorite if only I could get it here in Ontario! [there is no free trade between the provinces in Canada, but I can get many foreign beers!]

Bobbo quote:

"Dozens of police officers and sheriff's deputies remained at the scene late Monday awaiting a warrant to search the building where the women and the child were found." //// So... "ok" in an abundance of caution... in a way "BUT" a house where 4 kidnap victims escape and that is not grounds to immediately enter the premises and look for "whatever?"
unquote.

This the proper procedure based on many prior court case histories where charges filed have been thrown out of court for violation of civil rights. Talk about the military mind, this is exactly where training and experience comes into play. There will be charges filed if not already, and Miranda Rights read, etc. To "blow" a case like this can also be career ending! These "Officers and Gentlemen" have a greater responsibility to "administer" the justice processes in the acceptable manner as dictated by case law and their training!
That said, if upon questioning, it develops that there are any more victims in harms way, or an mminent threat of fire / explosion endangering the public good, immediate entry can be made until the rescue, or threat is eliminated. At that point all further efforts wait for the warrants! I would have thought you would have known this! [and I am not military or para-military....I am a medical reject due to a spinal deformity! But years of following the news, and an exceptional memory keeps me on top of those sort of situations!]
PS.
In this mornings news it is reported that one of the three men arrested was one of the many who helped in the initial search and condolences of one of the families! That takes a lot of nerve and gall! But it is typical of where the criminal wants to be on the inside of the investigation to keep tabs on what progress is being made! JFA

Obtuser--just fyi==your linked news spot works just fine for me in California.  I assume the station is giving the weather report instead of the traffic report in Canada just as in the US?  I would caution though..I read years ago that people who follow the news tend to be more depressed and anxious than those who don't.  I think that is true---at least for me.  Add in post on blogs and you can add aggressive and obnoxious.

Being an "Officer and Gentleman" of the USA Armed Forces.  My experience is that it is a strongly Macho Male Culture.  The only "gentlemanship" that comes out of it was there to begin with in the selection process.  That and not too much fraud for financial gain--caused in large part by rotating people every 3 years so that "relationships" don't build up.  Pros and Cons to all we do.

The military trained mind often is highly conditioned to reacting in response rather than premeditation. Mind you there has to be logic applied!

Following the daily news becomes a habit, BUT it stems from the questions:
-where are we today?
-where does it appear we are heading?
-and is this what we should be doing?
-is there a better approach or path?
And it is only human nature to criticize our leaders/politicians for their ineptness!
Currently 2 Cdn. Senators, former TV news reporters/anchor in one case are under severe criticism for skimming on the housing expense allowance provided for out of town members! They are materially giving the lie to the Harper appointed Conservatives statement that they will and are doing better than the previous Liberals did!

Obtuser--another High School Graduate having a hard time with what "hardly ever" means.

but on point:  When you say you have something that can "hurt you" would you describe that as being sick, being sick without symptoms, or not being sick at all?

We would like your tie breaking opinion on this fine point of contextualized grammer...... but..... if you can't deal with what "hardly ever" means, just how nuanced will your determination be?

We'll just wait and see.
Sick is a relative term that has varying degrees and has imprecise meanings due to individuals differing experiences and connotations assignment.
Hardly ever is very imprecise, does it mean rarely, very rarely, or just occasionally. But when the person issuing the statement gets precise and designates a number like one in a hundred times or one in a thousand cases, it becomes crystal clear what is meant! It is all in the numbers, not the relative terms assigned!
Tie breaker? Not tied until other posters weigh in. What do you say, ECA?

I think that we are missing another factor. Our more AGGRESSIVE MEDIA are providing much more info, faster, and in more detail [as I listen to 680 AM Toronto, All News All the Time!] http://www.680news.com/ Just click on the Golden Listen Live button....hopefully it is not blocked outside Canada! We have a full diet of American news when there are headline grabbers like the current scene in Cleveland, Ohio and the decades long abduction case of 3 women rescued last night. And on our all news TV channel CP24 I watched the news conference live this morning with the FBI and Cleveland area police for over 20 minutes:  http://www.cp24.com/ look for the live fed button also
Do you recall the US Navy's Tailhook Club? Carrier based Pilots, who held parties based on ravishing?
But in Canada one of ours is doing life for rapes and murders:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2010/10/18/col-williams-court-1018.html
This guy flew under the radar of the very thorough military vetting of promotions and recruiting done by the RCMP plain clothes div.!
This behavior of military personnel is not unique, as it also exists in corporate mgmt. and tends to get more cover up efforts to protect the corporate brand!

Is Bobbo a misspelling of Bobble? Apt if it is!
Asymptomatic is critical to recognition of that what you don't know or see, can hurt you! There is also non typical symptomatic presentations which can be very miss leading!
Are you biased against the expense of medical testing? It is honorous, but can be life extending [life saving is a mislabel........all any procedures do are extend our miserable existence!]
