16  The Tech Section / Operating Systems / Re: PC V Mac
« on: March 15, 2007, 01:48:39 AM »

Hi folks. long time no post...

Frankly I don't like the new layout, and that's why I was so absent here.
I want to pick this thread started by Max B. to pose this question to you:

Is Apple going to kill off the CD and become a Sony-like behemoth spanning the Media and Consumer Hardware markets?

I came to this conclusion last night after some debate on the usual Mac vs. PC threads on the blog. As usual Lauren was the regular Macboy and I was the usual bitter Mac basher...(ha, ha ,ha...). As a result we came to write long winded posts. Unfortunately the blog posts have short life span, so, just when it was gettin interesting it's gone.
Read all about it here:

This musing has something to do with the absolute bogus statments of S.Jobs. I don't buy it that he's coming out so clean and out against DRM, when it's all it his favour.
Maybe the citizen Jobs has this opinion. But the CEO of Apple can't. And also I smell a paradigm shift coming about. Maybe not set forth by Apple, but Apple will play a role, it will be a major cog in the machine.

We have Lost here too, but I can't watch it. It really sets my stomach upside down.
For me it sounds a little like Twin Peaks but without the brilliance...

Gays change when they get depressed. ;)

19  The Tech Section / DIY / Re: What do you think about building your own computer?
« on: February 15, 2007, 12:41:08 PM »

I didn't used it to anything practical. But it was the first trampoline into a all things computer... And the fact that I managed to learn assembler gave me a deeper understanding of the way computers work. And later on, having a kind of a geek reputation among my school mates, after serving my time in the army (conscription was obligatory then here in Portugal) a friend offered me a job on a video production house, working with an amiga (that I had absolutely no experience, actually the one I went to work with was the first one I saw). Then later started to work on another job with Macs and now it's PC...
To sum it up, if I never had my puny Timex Sinclair, today I could be a successful architect... :-)

I didn't mean to suggest you concealed your nationality -- I just never surmised you weren't an American until your last post.  I know you're a regular here.

Wow, is my English that good...
Thanks man, You've just made my day...
...or maybe not... (snarky remark :-) )

My view on this is that the next President will be Dem 4 sure. And Hilary seem to me that it's the best positioned "guy". She has "presidential" experience already. And maybe it's the right time to break the long lasting tabu of Women presidency. Obama seems too young to get there. But He should run nonetheless. To count rifles at least...

I think that the US President must be Internationally minded. Should be a Prerequisite

When the man-in-the-street perspective of things is: "Even though the UN didn't sanction the Invasion, nor the presence of WMDs were proven, still they go there anyway. This has Oil marks all over..."
When almost all of the 1st world agrees on Emission reduction treaties, US still refuses to sign...
And, on the other hand, when international menaces arise, the US is expected to act...

Of course the Job of being President of the United States is an International affair.

I guess that my country is more or less with the rest of the EU on this. Popular opinion is maybe 70/30 against Bush. "Official" opinion is much more conservative, albeit not that much leaning towards Bush's politics... (mind you we have a Socialist government, a la Tony Blair style...)

PS. Never concealed my Nacionality. It has been all along in my profile...

I really don't care. I just wished we non-US citizens could have a chance to vote on the US. President. Seems fair, since it's wheelings and dealings will impact just everybody in the world...

Nowdays I can't go in a plane without going through some hoops... Blame Osama and 911... Yeah. But who funded Osama in the first place? OSama was in US payroll when fighting USSR in Afghanistan. And Saddam was in US's payroll too when he was fighting Iran. Both gulf wars skyrocketed Oil price and impacted world economy growth...what US do on their own will impact the whole world.

« on: January 28, 2007, 06:27:05 AM »

Security and privacy is one thing. SPAM is a completely different matter. But both can be addressed by the same solution. If you are willing to shut some friends out,who can never understand the technology, you can set your email reader to only accept signed crypted mail, and trash the rest. You just have to tell everybody that sends mail your way to start doing so.

The greatest benefit of World War II for the United States was that it cut the population of males in half. Those who returned had jobs eagerly awaiting them, paving the road for the prosperity of the 1950s.

Not to speak of the rise of females in the workplace...

Just my 2 bits...

Umm, but under FEDERAL law we have to rights to make a copy for backup purposes.
If they copyright Everything, we cant..

Lets look at the hardware insted..
A DVR and DVD/HD/BR player, has no means to make a backup.  Unlike VHS, where you can attach a second recorder..The new formats, DONT give you the ability to do it.
Even if you made the system Networkable, you would only be able to SEND data to it, and NOT copy to the computer.
Using the NEW HD formats, the size of 1 video is so large, its redicoulous. and copying it??  I thought there was a flaw in windows about transferring LARGE files??  And then try to find an HD/BR burner, and not be placed on a LIST of suspects hacking copies.

Although there's an analog hole in audio (A-hole ?1?), and you can make CD to tape recordings or vynil to tape, in video there's not. VHS to VHS won't work with Pre-recorded material. Because of MacroVision technology. And DVD to VHS won't either. The manufacturers are required to enable MacroVision (along with regions...) on your DVD player in order to sell it (although it's trivial nowdays to go online and fetch unlock codes for virtually every player...).

Duhhh...
Where have you been last 12 years....
News flash: DVD's aren´t legally copiable either (or at least was the original intent)... That's the fuss with CSS... That's also why you can't have opensource DVD players. Because to uncrypt DVDs, you (the software players...) need to license (and pay for) unencrypyion, and that's copyrighted, thus not possible to include under the GNU copyleft.
But don't worry, there's reports that someone has already cracked AACS (drm cracked)
Now it just needs a court to rule that you can make a backup for personnal use.

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-YP-Z5QS-Digital-Player-Silver/dp/B000EPN00S/ref=pd_ys_qtk_rvi/104-0025359-9563932

There, 2gig, 20+ hours of play..
Its still abit high, at $165

and how about this:
http://www.amazon.com/Zune-Digital-Media-Player-Brown/dp/B000H0QDCC/sr=1-2/qid=1168022503/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-0583746-2556132?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

I know... It's the product from the evil empire...and Brown too... but seriously, it's the best "El-cheapo" deal. My reasoning is as follows: Since the Zune is the most bashed player on the market, it will sell poorly, and as stocks pile up on the shelfs the prices will plummet. As soon as it goes down to the right price for me I'll buy one. Why? Because I'm not into the iPod. Why? because it's a fashion statement that happens to play music. And I never ever buy music online (dowloaded I mean, I always buy plastic).

SANSA this one looks nice too.

http://www.opensourcewindows.org/
THIS looks cool, and the specs are wonderful
35 hours of play time, and 2 Gig..

MP3, OGG Vorbis, WMA, and WMA-DRM10 (digital rights protected), JPEG image viewer, a long lasting rechargeable battery for up to 35 hours, and a 1.8-inch color screen.

It dont say i can store files on it...Hmmm.

What exactly are you talking about?
The link has only OpenSource software... no players (other than software)...

There's only one solution...
every spammer found should be sentenced to write by hand, an apology to every mail address spammed.
And this hung upside down by the toes, while listening to Hank Williams. In China. In the winter.
