Thats a good top 3. Would we help Bill by coming up with a more spedific denominated list?
I am using green energy as a stand in for Global Warming as when green energy is cheaper than carbon then at least the input overload would start to reduce.... but I did almost list
4. Carbon Sequestration Techj which is close to 5. How to counter co2 pollution/AGW effects when the world wakes up to the fact that we are past a tipping point. I think we can recover from a past the tipping point fact pattern by herculean/smart science. Do we have the tech/process already, or does it need further development?
Heh, heh--"curing illness" almost makes overpopulation worse. I have never heard Bill Gates talk about what to do with all those more healthy persons on the globe. I do wonder if he has gone thru this process to his own satisfaction if not my own? |

I think BG is THE most interesting man in the World. He has 70B$ to spend any way he wants to and he wants to spend it to "Help Mankind."
So far--I don't think he is doing a good job of it. Spending your money to fight diseases is a "closed end" project. You spend your money, it helps BUT ONLY WHILE it is being spent. The disease and poverty being fought roars back after the money spent to combat it stops. BG has been on TV recently and I got more of the realization that he does seem to be going after diseases that can be "conquered" and erased from history. If true, that seems like a good deal. He spoke about 1-2 diseases to be eliminated by 2016 and then said he was going after malaria which would take 7-8 years. Once again, even if these diseases are eradicated the goals are close ended. A different kind of close ended in that it reaches a goal and then the "progress" past that goal is non-existent. Especially in the area of disease, seems to me that when one disease is eradicated, some other disease will arise to take its place? Maybe not. So...what BG is doing is good..but could it be better?
What would you spend BB on?
15-20 years ago I would have strongly recommended establishing the Human Genome, or the means by which to achieve that. This is an OPEN ENDED activity that could be approached a number of different ways. Fund establishing the Human Genome itself, or fund more basically the technology appropriate to being able to establish the HG. I think the HG Project started with the first approach but serendipitously Moore's Law interacted with the basic tech being used to address the issue and the goal was hit decades earlier than first thought possible and at a greatly reduced cost. Now as various genomes are being established and gene technology is advancing as well, who knows what outcomes will be achieved? And thats the value of OPEN ENDED projects. It gets other people, their money and ideas, involved as well--it has a multiplier effect not present in the closed end projects.
But, the Genome Project is a done deal. Where else might BB be spent to better mankind? Three other projects comes to mind:
1. Asteroid tracking/avoidance program to protect Mother Earth. 2. Space Elevator 3. Green Energy.
The thing with having BB is that its entirely possible that ALL of BG's projects could be tackled. A lot depends on the approach taken, the exact kind of "help" that would be provided. The best of course is the start up/breakthru that gets others involved. I can only assume their are smart ways, dumb ways, as yet to be discovered ways of achieving all these goals and more. Some projects are already being fully researched like photo-voltaics and such a project might be off the list for that reason?==>unless some spiffy approach is being ignored? Piezoelectric approaches seems to be mentioned all the time in new applications. Drawing energy from Ocean Thermal differentials seems to offer great potential with just some break thru required? Ha, ha==maybe BG just paying Congress to pass a carbon tax would spur everything needed to get Green Energy going? Best money spent. Not charitable/humanitarian in the standard sense.... but that is what spending some time thinking about how to best spend the BB is potentially so rewarding.
Other ideas, approaches, projects? |

Scotty--excellent review except I thought the tranches had been multiplied even higher? And the kicker? ===still going on today, with even higher exposures.
The criminality and malfeasance is obvious on its face!!! I don't believe International Big Banks are too Big to Fail. Thats "paid for" thinking.
"You are ALL GUILTY!!"
Pisses me OFF. Good thing about the 4th beer starts to make it go away..... until I sober up. |

I agree. Wholeheartedly..... but in ignorance. I have posted my own thread on this already: my quad core system under Win 7/64 hangs and slows down much more than did my dual core under Win XP/64. I notice this and its irritating. Doing the same basic mutlithreading activities of transcoding video files while surfing the internets. I ALSO NOTICE: almost no need to reboot my system to clear up the stoggy performance. Dual/xp worked better and faster without pausing/stalling until in needed to reboot which was as i might faultily recall every 3 days or so. No need to reboot Quad/Win 7 but it is slower and hangs for 1-2 minutes all the time.
I could make a long list of glitches and gripes of bad performance differences between Win 7 and XP==but in the end? I'd go with Win 7 as I HATE THE REBOOT. Amusing---are these tradeoffs consciously made by MS--? Seems to me if multi-threading a process worked pretty good under XP then they would have to change something to the bad to make it slower? Hmmmm--I can guess "its complicated" but =====I'll never give up lazy and incompetent when there is no real competition.
Monopolies are like that. |

Obtuser---stop making yourself look stupid just to pimp me. I really could wind up in jail. Still months to go.
for the movie: Roomie got into a shouting match with one of her scum-mates. All I heard her say was "I'm not a whore." Evidently, drug dealer No1 was jealous that she was hanging around drug dealer No 2 so he got jealous. Now, without me saying a thing I heard her on the phone tell No 1 that he could not come over to visit because "I" was not allowing it and he would be trespassing if he did --so he can't come over.
She is stupid, Druggie No 1 is stupid (No 2 is actually smart) but surely if the cops told them they could visit any time he wanted with Roomies permission, then neither one would be doing what they are doing now. Its "working out" for me right now.... but I don't think cops should give out different conflicting advice to parties in conflict.
I also don't think the law that applies to commercial multiple rental agents should also apply to homeowners renting out a bedroom. Call me self centered. |

Been a few more days. Without me saying anything, for the first time in almost 3 years, Roomie has removed half the junk in her room and it looks "almost" acceptable. The evidence is mounting that the cops told her quite a few things opposite to what they told me. I wonder where the truth lies?===>probably "within" the discretion of the officer?
Not getting cocky, just counting my blessings. If her scum comes around, still planning on barring them from the house. I do want the cops invovled to get their names and ID on the record. The cops will insist these guests be allowed in, I will accede to their badge/gun/batton/authority.... and we'll see what happens thereafter. In a vacuum, I would want to leave my own house myself. But at 200AM in the morning, I won't bother my neighbors, and without me in the house, who knows what would grow legs and walk out?
Its an advantage being 6'3" and mean looking, but her friends are 20 years younger. 20 years ago---I could easily have taken Old Bob. Ha, ha. |

The Tech Section / Tech Rants And Raves / Re: YouTube started Freezing---EDIT: Now it Works

I see this issue started TWO months ago. I started using Opera to watch YouTube as fixing the browser bar interference wasn't providing a good fix. Irritating...but workable. Could not get my Firefox Bookmarks to load in Opera so I kept using it as my main browser.
I have INTENTIONALLY not upgraded or modified any program that nominally might have affected this issue. I have installed and deleted some games and thats about it. By accident, I clicked on a youtube link yesterday--and its now working for 24 hours. So....something happened all on its lonesome and i remain hesitant to upgrade/update my virus protection, adobe pdf, flash player and all such related programs because "its working."
I wish there was someway to really FREEZE my computer in its current state. Like running off a Live Linux on disk or something. Why not? EVERYTHING WORKS. i don't want to introduce a glitch to upgrade who knows what so that I can connect to mobile devices===>I have no mobile devices so why modify my system?
Too simple I guess?
EDIT--I did nothing out of the ordinary to cause youtube and firefox to not work together. Seems to me that "millions" of other users should have had the same issue for the same reason? Should have been an outroar of protest? Or does this silent glitch and fix go on all the time and we put up with it, having no other options? |

Well, its been a few days. Roomie has had a few girl friends over to visit and they have stayed outside on the porch. No inside visits.
What to think???
Cops showed up and told me she could have anyone she wanted 24/7. Its "almost like" they told her she couldn't have guests inside?
I was a bit surprised that on their arrival they talked to us separately to get the "facts." When I arbitrated disputes, I had the parties almost always together at the same time so everyone was playing off the same sheet of paper.
Ha, ha. When the cops left, I "almost" said to her: "Well, it looks like you won that one." But I didn't because she is too stupid to understand half of what she hears. Hmmm....I can see cop SOP saying almost anything to calm the moment down. But tell opposite things to people who live together in the same house with a chronic dispute? I don't see how that could work out long term.
Only 7 more weeks to go before the 3 week eviction process starts. I've got a different iron in the fire too I don't want to jinx but it may backfire on me as well.
Reading the internets about "eviction guests" is quite revealing. I may install a steel clamshell over my home with laser ID and not allow anyone past the property line. Whole bunch of this comes down to bad policing. They will treat trespassers as tenants absent overwhelming proof of the kind not available until in a court room. The bias to err really should favor the home owner. Get the nexus of control as close to the point of conflict as possible. STOP teaching scum how to take advantage of the innocent. |

Sorry Scotty--I mistook your comments as applying to a Landlord-Tenant rental agreement NOT what you clearly said directed at getting insurance to cover any fire caused by this tenant. Indeed, I don't know if my policy covers fires caused by or merely started in the room occupied by a paying tenant. I can see the Ins Co wanting to make that some kind of "commercial" deal rather than a homeowners deal. Chisling Bastards..... but ain't that life?
I agree having insurance to cover the actual exposure is a good thing to make sure you have. Thanks. |

Well...I don't understand the utility of trying to get a Landlord/Tenant agreement on a tenant I'm in the process of evicting. Wny would she sign an agreement that has terms she doesn't agree with which is why she's being evicted? And if she did sign it, and then violated the agreement, and then I gave notice, time to correct etc==that "should" all be moot with the termination without cause I have already started.
Am I missing something copletely or is the set-up/context of our current dispute being kept in mind??
In either case==my issue is NOT what to do with my tenant but rather what to do when her desired house guest shows up at midnight smoking a cigarette high on drugs and he wants to come into "my"/our/my housemates bedroom. Cops have said I have to allow that. How do I best protect myself given this vise I find myself in?

Back when I owned and managed a 20 unit complex of rental units I ran into the welfare cheat who knew how to stop paying rent and build up a nest egg prior to finally being evicted. The system teaches these leeches how to extract the most blood under the notion of "Tenant Rights." Most landlords have an interest in keeping good tenants and getting rid of bad ones. A self centered financial interest. But most laws are written as if they were simple slum lords somehow taking advantage of people with little money. As stated--I had no problems with the laws as they pertained to rental units. Its my own HOME where I think the law is out of date/bias.
I raise this to recall and comment I had a friend with a larger complex. He did have biker friends he used for intimidation. Never got into trouble over it but I stayed away from the biker class of self help. Lie down with dogs.....
The law..... rides an ass. Yet the alternatives are hard to imagine. |

Obtuser--getting my valuables off property is good advice. Thanks.
There is no sex or other complicating issues going on at all. My agreement to let her stay here was one of "compassion" as I see it in HER own best interest to learn how to get along as she has no alternatives. But.... the fact that she can't form that recognition is why she's in the position she is. Her mother is evidently even worse--alcoholic schizophrenic. As I'm not.... I thought the change would be good for her. My housemates own adult daughter talks to her on the phone but has no other contact even though she lives only a few miles away. She cares---but not enough to ruin her own life. Nice balance. The crazy will stop with the Gen X.
I have been a little bit "self centered" in this experience. Living with crazy. In isolation--just her and me--I think she was getting better. But as so often the case...its her friends. Her druggie and sex desiring and ex-con "friends" telling her what she wants to hear. And as I have told her until I stopped: You create most of your own problems. Just as I have.
Life is like that. |
