The Tech Section / Operating Systems / Re: Just Deleted a Large File--what do you use to Recover?

ECA--What do you want me to say..... expressly?===> I made a mistake.
Can you recall the name of that program? I'm actually looking for one that works. Everyone I have ever tried all seem to recover the same level of files--those that are deleted and go to the wastebasket. Recuva is recommended by several reference sites and it does appear to be doing a deep search as it has taken 4 hours to get to 8% done. In the "quick search" it did not turn up any deleted files which is not impressive as I was deleting files off that drive all the time. Maybe my Folder Delete interfered with single files deleted from the same folder?--ie--no place to recover it to.
My back up procedure occurs AFTER the process I was engaged in. I can't recreate what I did to cause the delete message to come up, but as I was operating half on autopilot and my muscle memory took over as I was half asleep. ...... I hate it when that happens.
We need more lerts. |

The Tech Section / Operating Systems / Just Deleted a Large Folder--what do you use to Recover?

Deleted my Video Folder of 128 Giga Bytes. Not the very worst thing in the world but given that I noticed it immediately ((because I could not work on the next file in the Folder because the Folder was gone)) there has been zero activity on that Hard Drive.
Waste Can does not contain the Folder. Why Oh Why has $MS not fixed this glitch since the beginning of time? It should work without fail until over written?
Anyhoo--even with zero activity on the Hard Drive since deletion, I've never had much luck getting deleted files back. I'm using Recuva right now. Bounces between 2-3 days remaining. I used "Get Data Back" a paid for recovery tool I used fairly often years and years ago. Forget why/how I was that clumsy, but it came in handy..... doing a "dos based recovery" or however it worked. Again.. not perfect at all but it did recover a few more files than the free less effective and quicker recovery tools.
Why don't these tools WORK? ? Why is there not an instant undo command like "Control Z" when typing? Bitch, bitch,...... BITCH!!
What do you use? |

Water Cooler / GMOTW - M. Scott / Re: Hydrogen: Still a battery; but easier to split from water now

Scotty: "What I object to is calling hydrogen a fuel because that to me implies that it is a source of energy." /// Hydrogen is the fuel in a Hydrogen Fuel Cell. The energy of a fuel cell is the hydrogen that is stored and the free Oxygen from the air. Won't work without BOTH fuels. How is that not a source of energy? Not exclusively, but certainly an "a."
Lots of definitions being touched on/bounced off here. |

I have to admit I was thinking of "battery" as a device that stored electrical energy. Not a device that could store/accumulate something that thereafter could be turned into electricity.
In common parlance, I think that is more valid than not. As an accumulator, would you include any body of water above and connected to a generator as a battery? Seems to do violence to the common sense of what we buy in blister packs at the grocery store.
Should we quibble about H not being a chemical? I think so because it is not electrical energy that is stored.
I will google "battery" for the first time:...............A device containing an electric cell or a series of electric cells storing energy that can be converted into electrical power (usually in the form of direct current).
Hydrogen Accumulators are known as fuel cells--not electrical cells. Define fuel cell:.......................Hah--its all over the place.
Wiki makes a distinction: Fuel cells are different from batteries in that they require a constant source of fuel and oxygen/air to sustain the chemical reaction, they can however produce electricity continually for as long as these inputs are supplied.
"ITS DEFINITIONAL." As so many things are. |

jpfitz has told me he can't create an account on CageMatch and so cannot join in the discussion.
Maybe that is why our group has not grown at all in over a year?

How would those skills help her get her job back? And wouldn't using them put her right in the box she got fired for?
Judo Skills: trying to write a law that would protect this woman's employment while recognizing the right/duty of Employers/SCHOOLS to maintain a safe work environment. Bottom Line--she is still the actor most close to the problem, that being her husband. She should suffer for the choices/calamity that she brings to the employment arena rather than all others who are more remote share in the risk presented.
Lots of life is unfair. So is justice. |

How is this ruling anything except the obvious outcome? What first look argues for isolated dna to be patentable?
Seems to me the harder question is what protection should be given to manipulated dna. "You Know" the druthers of the Marketplace should not rule all nor be the basis of sound social policy. If you don't allow patents on modified dna then Big Pharma won't invest in genetic cures. Fine. If there is no free market for any service that really needs to be done... sounds like a job for gubment rather than a sell off of the public domain. |

Demonstrating how infinitely flexible I can be when it comes to the definition/meaning/application of words and ideas, even in the area of hard mechanically applied science, I will ignore the completely inappropriate idea of hydrogen production being a battery and also wait for what should be Obtusers illuminating contribution?
One point about solar voltaics--as long as the energy source is free, it almost doesn't matter how efficient they are? Yes, yes--don't quibble.
Back when I "almost" got rich, I was going to go off grid and produce Hydrogen with the excess solar capacity involved. There are many possible approaches to making hydrogen gas/liquid safely stored and transported that will be developed if there is ever a market for it. I think I liked storing the gas vapor in a metal compound at reasonable pressures. Not going thru a liquid stage made the whole process easier for the home enthusiast.
Dangerous slippery slope there.... making your "life style" your hobby. ..... "Trippy!" |

I think if you talk to a Zombie for too long, you become one. Zombieism spreads that way and just like Aides. You could bite one with a Dental Dam in place I suppose.

Its not a wiretap... only in essence "a billing record."
The Sup Ct has held that the fact you made a phone call is not protected activity--only the content of the call is which has a low bar to get a court order to allow.
To me, the key is simply to know what the rules of our system are. Thereafter, one can watch what one says, use encryption, a throw away phone, or be a good boy.
Whats the harm again? |
