Still, the Iraqi government has purchased more than 1,500 of the devices, known as the ADE 651, at costs from $16,500 to $60,000 each. Nearly every police checkpoint, and many Iraqi military checkpoints, have one of the devices, which are now normally used in place of physical inspections of vehicles.

Wasn't there something about a ruse used by a police station that involved a copy machine and a couple of wires with a printout of the word liar face down on the copy machine. Whenever the cops thought a suspect was lying, they'd hit the copy button and a printout of liar would pop out. Apparently, some idiots were fooled by this. Or, is this urban legend? Either way, it would work on exactly the same principle.
